I · The pool
Green marble,and a barrel vault.
Eighteen metres of Vert d’Estours marble, quarried for Varenne in 1923 and laid by hand. The vault above was glazed in the restoration, so the water takes the colour of whatever the sky is doing.
Lengths in the morning, a book on the loungers in the afternoon. The water is kept at twenty-nine degrees, and the attendant will bring tea without being asked.
II · The hammam
Steam,lantern light and zellige.
Hand-cut tiles from Fès, a warm marble slab at the centre and brass lanterns that were here before the war. The ritual follows the old order: heat, black soap, the kessa glove, then rest.
In the evening the hammam can be reserved for two, with mint tea and orange-blossom water waiting in the rest room.
III · The treatment rooms
Five rooms,one rule: no hurry.
Each treatment room has its own window onto the courtyard lindens, its own heated table and a therapist who has read your notes before you arrive.
Oils are blended in the house each week. If you would like the same one again next year, we will have kept the recipe.
