Restoring eleven thousand crystals
The craftsmen who lowered the chandelier, and put it back.
Words by The JournalThe great chandelier in the lobby weighs just over a tonne. In 2019 it was lowered to the floor for the first time since 1924, and a team of four spent eight months cleaning it by hand.
Each crystal was numbered, washed, dried with chamois and hung back exactly where it had been.
They found a 1924 coin wedged in the crown, left by the original installers for luck. It has been put back.
