A moment in this room
Six forty-five. The lamps of the Opéra come on across the avenue, one row at a time. Someone has drawn the velvet curtains halfway, the way she liked them, and there is a glass of something cold on the piano lid.
Named for Marguerite Vale
Soprano, every season from 1928 to 1951.
For twenty-three winters the soprano Marguerite Vale took these rooms for the length of the season. She rehearsed with the balcony doors open, and on performance nights the doormen held the traffic so she could cross in her furs. She left behind a pair of opera glasses, still in the writing desk, and a standing order for consommé at midnight.
